The HiFiMan pack a little bit less bass, but not by much, and they sound less sharp. Their bass also extends lower than the Philips' bass. The secondary 4-hole pads seem to tune the DT1990 to the diffuse field response (flat uncompensated bass): Clamping force: medium The pads aren’t that easy/fast to swap anyway. The treble is the typical ‘Beyer treble’ which means ‘overly detailed/sharpish’ and emphasized but slightly better in quality than the (MUCH cheaper) DT 990. This would allow the DT1990 to be used on balanced amplifiers as well. This suggests a decently large soundstage that may be perceived to be located inside the listener's head as opposed to in-front. This is subtle but noticeable and seem to be happening on our subject that wears glasses. This way the plots are overlay-ed and it is easy to see how the tonal balance changes. The passive filter that removes the sharp peak is as good as obligatory when using the A-pads. They have the most premium look and feel of all the Beyerdynamic models that we've tested so far, and they're a durable, sturdy option that should last you a while. The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro is a solid pair of headphones for engineers, delivering a detailed, accurate frequency response capable of reaching down for deep lows in the mix. The headband also doesn't extend as far as some of the other over-ears we've tested, so they might not fit as well on all head shapes and sizes but on average, they are comfortable enough for most listeners. They're also slightly more comfortable than the Beyerdynamic and deliver a more balanced frequency response throughout, which will not sound as sharp on S and T sounds as the Beyerdynamic. The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro have excellent bass. The DT 1990 PRO also doesn’t have a bass roll-off like the DT 990 and will be able to reproduce deeper frequencies down to 10Hz. The treble peak becomes much more obvious (and annoying) when using the Analytical pads. The treble performance is good. The DT1990 can be considered to be an improved DT880 when the Analytical pads are fitted. Slightly improved performance between 400Hz and 1kHz. The mids sound very ‘open’, excellently defined/detailed, dynamic and well separated (wide headstage). Bass to mids are well balanced / integrated and have an excellent ‘separation’ as in not ‘bleeding’ into each other. Also the impulse response looks much better. The DT 1990 have a well-balanced reproduction of instruments and vocals in the mid-range, a deep and extended bass and a decent but slightly sharp treble. The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO and the Philips SHP9600 are both open-back headphones that are good for neutral sound and pack an extra punch in the bass range. The metal parts and headband as well as replaceable cable are of higher quality. However, there is not a 10KHz notch present. The pads on the DT1990 are mounted on a removable ring that can be pulled off from the cups with some small force needed.Once these rings are removed from the cups it is much easier to change the pads. Also, they do not have the convenience of wireless design or multiple connection options for an optimized experience on Xbox One or PS4. The DT 990 Pro has a higher treble peak but at around 14kHz. In the mid-range, important for blocking out speech, the achieve only 1dB of isolation, which is barely noticeable. The impulse shows some overshoot with the Analytical pads. What is obvious here is that the drivers in these headphones are probably the same and only the enclosure tuning below 2kHz differs. The bigger the deviation the stronger the effect. They don't have the spacious Soundstage of the DT 990 PRO or the DT 880, but they have a better bass thanks to the closed design. However, the big 10dB bump in the sibilance range (6KHz-10KHz) makes these headphones noticeably sharp and even piercing on S and Ts, which will be most noticeable on vocals and cymbals. Very little difference between the two, and the DT 1990 is even more sibilant than the DT 990. With the music at 100dB SPL, the leakage at 1 foot away, averages at 60dB SPL and peaks at 75dB SPL, which is a lot louder than the noise floor of most offices. The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 are one of the best sounding critical listening headphones we've tested but can be a bit too sharp on already bright tracks.
